Your child will really appreciate you taking the time to customize their special space. The process of selecting a theme for your child's bedroom will be much easier if you implement the eight tips in this article.
1. Make a tiny room look more spacious by painting the walls in a light color with cool undertones.

Use cool colors like cornflower blue or pale moss green and then add a theme inexpensively by using wall border or self stick wall appliques. This will also allow for your child to grow with the room. The paint will last through many years and the borders can easily be changed.
2. Choose a theme for your child's room based on their likes, hobbies or interest.
Kids want to feel special and want a bedroom that they can call their own. Base their room design on special interests or hobbies such as pirates, flowers, teddy bears, amusement parks, or themes your child likes and feels comfortable with. A child's room should be a safe haven, where your child feels comfortable; a place the child can truly call their own and feel that the space was created especially for them. Be sure to get your child's input when deciding on a decorating theme for their bedroom.
3. Love that designer fabric, but can't afford more than a yard or two?
You can frame a large swatch of the designer fabric for instant art and use paint or wallpaper to carry out the color scheme. Or, for a more in depth option, cut out shapes from the designer fabric and sew them on inexpensive throw pillows. You can carry out your design theme very inexpensively by picking up solid throw pillows from a local discount store and hand sewing some of the shapes from your fabric onto them. This is a great trick to spread the main design around the room and fill in with your color scheme around the rest of the child's room.
4. Choose decorations that can easily be changed as your child grows.
Use wooden letters that spell out your child's name, shelving units with toys and stuffed animals, bookshelves that can be used for baby accessories when your child is small and converted to hold books as your child reaches school age. Use wall borders which can easily be changed as your child grows.
5. Add bright colors to your child's room as accent colors.
Bright colors will promote a cheery and happy room and stimulate your child's mind. Even if you have chosen a lighter wall color, you can add vibrant colors to the theme of the room easily. For example, if you have painted the child's room light blue, use bright red, yellow and navy blue as accent colors. Use these colors at least three times in the room to create balance.
6. Find something unique from your background to develop the design of your child's room.
This will teach the child his roots. For example, if your relatives are of Scottish decent, find a stuffed animal with a kilt to put on your child's shelf. Use this as a basis to teach your child about his background, ancestors and traditions.
7. Add whimsical touches to shelving units for added style.
If the items are put up on shelves, it will be kid friendly. Consider using stuffed animals, wooden painted toys, puppets, etc. This is an easy way to add color and style to a child's room, and these items can be updated and easily changed as your child grows.
8. Choose a focal point for your child's bedroom.
Decide what you would like the focal point to be in the bedroom. It could be the bed, a specific wall, a floor to ceiling desk and shelf area, or anything you want it to be. Put most of the design in this area and then build around it and around the rest of the room. An example would be to use a castle mural on one wall of the bedroom and then develop the castle theme around the room with colorful and inexpensive accessories.
These eight ideas, if used in combination or alone, should give you a starting point when considering a decorating theme for your child's bedroom.
